Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, International Academic Competitions is pleased to announce that it will be holding a series of International Geography Bee Regional Quiz Tournaments in the USA. For 2018-2019, these are open only to students in 8th grade and below. The Regional Quiz Tournaments provide an alternate way for students to qualify for the 2019 International Geography Bee Middle School and Elementary School National Championships in June. Students can certainly still continue to qualify through the National Qualifying Exams. Additionally, the Regional Quiz Tournaments are held on the same format that we use at our National Championships, so the competitions, aside from being an exciting new way to compete on their own, provide great preparation for students planning on competing at IGB Nationals.
All IGB Regional Quiz Tournaments consist of 3 preliminary rounds of 30 questions and then 1 final round of 30 questions for the top students. All students play in all three of the preliminary rounds; the number who make the final will vary from 3-10 based on turnout.
Aside from the geographic focus, the rules are the same as the Varsity and JV regional tournaments of the National History Bee. A copy of the rules is available here. For sample questions, please see the past questions used at our past National Championships, though note that the questions used at IGB Regionals will be somewhat easier.
Please note that each IGB Regional Quiz Tournament will feature both an Elementary Division for students in 6th grade and younger and a Middle School Division for students in 7th and 8th grade (unless one of these divisions has fewer than 4 students, in which case, they will be combined). Students can qualify for Nationals though, if they are either in the top 50% of students in their IGB Regional Quiz Tournament Division, or, if they are in the top 50% of students in 8th grade, 7th grade, 6th grade, or 5th grade and younger (based on their grade) as these are the age divisions that will be contested at IGB Nationals. Note that any student who qualifies for IGB Nationals through the IGB Regional Quiz Tournaments also qualifies for the National Championships of the US Geography Olympiad as well.
Tournament Dates and Sites
For the 2018-2019 academic year, the IGB Regional Quiz Tournaments will be held at all tournament sites where the National History Bowl Middle School competitions are taking place on the A Set of questions. These are the sites listed as sites 1-21 on this page here. You can find exact start times for the IGB Regional Quiz Tournaments by clicking on the tournament links on that page. You do NOT need to come at the start of the day for the Opening Meeting of the National History Bowl (unless you are competing in that as well). Please arrive, however, at least 15 minutes prior to the listed start time of the Opening Meeting for the History Bee and Geography Quiz Tournament.
Costs and Registration
The participation fee in all cases is $15 per student. This must be paid at the tournament itself, either by cash, or by check payable to “US Geography Olympiad” (this is the official name we use for all regional and national geography competitions in the USA, including for the International Geography Bee).
Registration is now open for all the IGB Regional Quiz Tournaments which have been scheduled so far through the link here. Note, however, that advance registration, while recommended (so that we can send you the pre-tournament email) is not required. Same day registration is permitted – you also do not need to arrive at the start of the day for this; 15 minutes prior to the listed start time of the Opening Meeting for the History Bee and Geography Quiz Tournament is still fine.
