International Academic Competitions is pleased to announce that this Fall students all over the world will have the unique opportunity to take part in our online International Geography Bee Fall Leagues. These Leagues will take place at different times depending on where students are located. North American students will play on Wednesday evenings in October, African/European/Middle Eastern students on November 7th-8th, and Asian students on November 21st-22nd.

North American International Geography Bee League

Leagues will be organized into nationwide pools with a soft field cap of 100 per age division. If the soft cap is exceeded, the players will be as evenly split as possible into 2 or more geographical sub-divisions. There will be three guaranteed prelim rounds of 30 questions on Weeks 1, 2 and 3. Semi-Finals will be played on Week 4 and Finals on Week 5.

All matches will be played using an online buzzer system and Zoom.

The International Geography Bee will begin play on Wednesday, October 21st, 2020 and will end on Wednesday, November 11th, 2020. Registration will close on Sunday, October 18th at 11:59pm Eastern Time.

Matches will be played on Wednesday evenings at 7pm Eastern Time. There will be three guaranteed prelim rounds of 30 questions on Weeks 1, 2 and 3. Semi-Finals (if needed) will be played on Week 4 and Finals on Week 5.

Age Divisions will be made up as follows:

Divisions:
Varsity:students in 11th-12th grade
Junior Varsity: students in 9th-10th grade
Middle Division (Canada only): students in 8th grade or younger
Please note, there is no official Middle School Division in the United States. All Middle School students may play in Junior Varsity however by checking “Middle Schooler playing in JV” on the form.

US Nationals and Canadian Championships Qualification

The top 60% of students from each country (Canada, US, and Mexico), according to prelim rank and, in each age division will qualify for the International Geography Bee at the Canadian Championships/US Nationals and the top 30% to the International Geography Bee World Championships. This qualification method is in addition to the qualification exam, which will still be offered.

Awards

The top three students, based on the final results, in each age division will receive medals shipped to them after the event concludes.

Cost

Geography Bee League Registrations will cost 30USD per student. Payments can be made in the form of a check or online with a credit card.

Asian International Geography Bee League

All matches will be played using an online buzzer system and Zoom.

Schedule (UTC/GMT +8):
November 21 @ 9:00 – Geography Bee Preliminary Rounds
November 21 @ 21:00 – Geography Bee Playoff Rounds

Divisions:
Varsity: born in August 2004 or earlier
Junior Varsity: born between September 2004 and August 2006
Middle School: born in or after September 2006

Tournament Format:
There will be 3 preliminary round matches that all students must participate in. The top students will compete in the playoff rounds. The exact number of students that qualify for playoff rounds will be determined after the registration deadline.

Costs:
30 USD per player

Awards:
Top three students in each division will receive medals. All students will receive a digital Certificate of Participation.

Asian Championships Qualification:
The top 60% (including ties) of students in each division will qualify for the 2020-21 Asian Championships.

Students who cancel their registration for free prior to the registration deadline. Students dropping after November 14, 2020 owe 100% of their registration fees.

 

African/European/Middle Eastern International Geography Bee League

The European Fall International Geography Bee Online League will play three preliminary matches on Saturday, November 7th from 18:30-21:00 Central European Time. For Playoffs, all students will be ranked by points, and the top students will be assigned to a semi-final and then final. The playoffs will be played on Sunday, November 8th from 18:30-20:00 Central European Time.

The Registration Window will close on November 1st at 11:59pm Central European Time.

Divisions:
Varsity: Students born before September 2004
Junior Varsity: Students born between September 2004- August 2006
Middle School: Students born September 2006 or more recently

European Championships Qualification

The top 60% of students from each country, according to prelim rank and, in each age division will qualify for the International Geography Bee at the European Championships and the top 30% to the next International Geography Bee World Championships.

Awards

The top 3 students, based on the final results, in each age division will receive medals shipped to them after the event concludes.
